The Missouri Department of Health (MDH) recently issued December 2023 medical and adult use sales data, which are shown in the table and chart below. December adult use sales broke the $100 million mark for the first time and total sales for the month came in at $123.3 million. While adult use sales set a record for the state’s market in December, total sales are the second highest ever recorded, slightly below $126.2 million in March 2023.
For 2023 overall, adult use retailers in Missouri tallied $1.036 billion in revenue. Adult use sales commenced in February 2023.
Medical dispensaries in Missouri generated $302.2 million in sales last year. Monthly medical cannabis sales trended downward throughout the year. December’s medical cannabis sales tally represents a decline of 54.6% from $37 million in January, before the adult use market opened.
Total legal cannabis sales in Missouri in 2023 reached nearly $1.34 billion. Previously, Illinois was the only state to see total legal cannabis sales top $1 billion in the first year of an adult use market being open. In 2020, Illinois retailers racked up almost $1.04 billion in sales with the adult use market open for the entire year. While Missouri’s first-year adult use sales tally is extremely impressive, the state’s market does not appear to be set to grow at the same rate as Illinois has since 2020.
